Chess.com Botwinnik Open format & information

After last year's great success, Botwinnik will again organize a weekend tournament in collaboration with Chess.com during the first weekend of January. Participate now for €35 (€30 if paid before November 1st) and have your games processed for FIDE and KNSB ratings. We have space for a maximum of 300 participants!   • Format

    We play 6 rounds with a time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move in 3 different groups. In addition, there are four-player groups with 1 round per day.

    A group: ≥2000
    B group: ≥1750 and <2050
    C group: <1800

    We use the KNSB rating. In its absence, the FIDE rating and KNSB rapid rating will be considered.

    The entry fee is 35 euros for the open tournament (30 if paid before November 1st) and 20 euros for the four-player groups. Non-KNSB members pay an additional 12.50 euros for one year of rating membership. IMs and GMs do not pay an entry fee.

    Registration is final after receipt of the entry fee on NL03 INGB 0002 5547 52 in the name of S.V. Botwinnik, stating your own name.

  • Prizes

    The total prize fund is over 4000 euros for the open groups.

    In addition to the above prizes, there are material prizes (sponsored by Chess.com), rating prizes, youth prizes, and women’s prizes. All prizes will be further supplemented if there are enough participants.

    In the four-player groups, the winner will receive a trophee.

  • Schedule

    Friday, January 1:
    Opening: 18:45 - 19:00
    Round 1 + Four-player groups: 19:00 - 23:00*
    *Registration/check-in is not required for the open group when paid in advance. Players without an opponent will be re-paired after 30 minutes.

    Saturday, January 2:
    Round 2: 9:00 - 13:00
    Round 3 + Four-player groups: 14:00 - 18:00
    Round 4: 19:00 - 23:00

    Sunday, January 3:
    Round 5: 9:00 - 13:00
    Round 6 + Four-player groups: 14:00 - 18:00
    Prize ceremony: 18:30 (or as soon as possible after the last game)

    A bye for half a point is only possible in round 1 and/or 2 of the open groups. All other byes will count as a forfeit loss.

  • Playing Venue

    Motion Beweeg college, Van Doornenplantsoen 1, 2722 ZA Zoetermeer

    Note: the entrance is through the gate along the school! There is ample free parking available.

  • Rating en regulations

    Pairings will be based on the January 2027 rating, conditionally that it is published before January 1ste 13:00. Otherwise the December list will be used. The games will be submitted for both the KNSB rating and the FIDE rating.

  • Live boards

    From home, 38 games can be followed live online thanks to our live boards. These boards are distributed across the different groups. Board will be used for the top of every group, streamers and some will be used for random games.

All (paying) participants get a prize if they register their Chess.com username. At the end of the tournament we will ruffle some additional prizes using the usernames.
